GSO002 Problem 5
Problem Statement
Impact Force of an Ultra-High-Speed Water Jet Cutter
Problem Statement
Consider the physical characteristics of a "water jet cutter" used as an industrial cutting machine. This device cuts steel and rock by the enormous force generated when water is ejected from a fine nozzle at ultra-high speed.
A stream of water with density ρ is continuously ejected horizontally (in the +x direction) at a constant speed v from a nozzle of cross-sectional area S. The water stream strikes the flat face of a thick rigid plate fixed perpendicular to the water stream.
After hitting the plate, the water spreads in all directions along the plate surface, so that the velocity component perpendicular to the plate (the x direction) completely vanishes. The water flow is steady; gravity, air resistance, and interactions between water droplets can all be neglected.
Find the total magnitude I of the impulse exerted on the plate by the water stream over a time interval T.
Constraints
- Density of water: ρ=1.0×103 kg/m3
- Cross-sectional area of nozzle: S=1.25×10−6 m2
- Speed of ejected water: v=640 m/s
- Observation time: T=8.0 s
Input Format
Give the magnitude I [N⋅s] of the impulse as a positive integer.
Solution
This problem tests understanding of the relationship between momentum change and impulse for a fluid.
1. Mass Hitting the Plate in a Small Time Interval
Consider a small time interval Δt [s]. The water ejected from the nozzle during Δt travels a distance vΔt. The volume ΔV of water that collides with the plate is:
ΔV=S⋅(vΔt)The mass Δm of this water is:
Δm=ρΔV=ρSvΔt2. Impulse from Momentum Change
The x-direction velocity of the water changes from v before the collision to 0 after.
By Newton's third law, the impulse ΔI received by the plate from mass Δm is:
ΔI=Δm⋅v=ρSv2Δt3. Average Force on the Plate
The average force F on the plate is:
F=ΔtΔI=ρSv24. Numerical Calculation
Substituting the given values:
F=(1.0×103)×(1.25×10−6)×(640)2=1.25×10−3×409600=1.25×409.6=512 NThis force is applied continuously for T=8.0 s, so the total impulse I is:
I=F×T=512×8.0=4096 N⋅sAnswer: 4096
