GSO000 Problem 1
Problem Statement
Work and Energy on an Inclined Plane
Problem Statement
A smooth inclined plane, fixed in place, makes an angle θ with the horizontal. An object of mass m is placed at the bottom of the inclined plane, and a constant force F is applied along the incline in the upward direction, slowly pulling the object a distance L up the incline. Find the work W done by the applied force on the object. Assume the magnitude of gravitational acceleration is g, and ignore air resistance.
Constraints
- Mass m=5.0 kg
- Angle of inclination θ=30∘
- Distance pulled L=10 m
- Gravitational acceleration g=9.8 m/s2
Input Format
Find the value of work W in joules (J) and give the answer as a positive integer.
Solution
Since the object is pulled "slowly," its acceleration is zero and the forces on the object are always balanced.
Considering the force balance along the incline, the applied force F equals the component of gravity along the incline mgsinθ.
Therefore, the magnitude of the required force F is:
F=mgsinθUsing the definition of work W=F×d (force × distance), the positive work W done by the force is:
W=F×L=mgLsinθSubstituting the given numerical values:
W=5.0×9.8×10×sin30∘=490×0.5=245 JTherefore, the answer is 245.
Answer: 245
